Inner Journey

This painting has gone through several versions and titles, arriving at its present state after I spattered gold paint from atop a ladder to add brighteness. Intertwined with symbolism, its story is deep and emotional, which I will let the viewer discover and interpret for themselves.

  1. I bought this painting after seeing it in her gallery last night, and actually getting a tingling sensation up my spine. It made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. I was immediately drawn to this piece and after talking with Laura it became clear why. We had a delightful conversation about how it came to be and the symbolism. I saw the painting a little differently than Laura, which is as it should be. The lower part of the painting seems to me to be underwater, the tendrils like kelp and the murky figures in the circles are encapsulated in isolated bubbles rising from the depths - toward Hope. The dark figure in the square is the darkness present in each of us - in this case surrounded by Love. The Love frees us to move beyond our inner darkness, to blossom and explore the infinite possibilities that lead us to Joy, represented by the tiny piece of sheet music in the upper left (you can't really see it on this scale, but it is there). Appropriately, it is a snippet from the Ode to Joy. This very closely follows the path my wife and I are on, our "Inner Journey" Engraved on the inside of our wedding rings are the words "Hope and Joy". It is as if this piece revealed itself to Laura, through a number of mutations, just for us.

  2. Thank you Dan for a beautiful interpretation of this painting. Your words, and what you see in the painting remind me why I love to paint and clarify what I want to offer to the world through my work. -Laura
